CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“Where to now? I’m kind of hungry. There’s this good burger spot around the corner.” Astrid spoke as fast as she walked. She turned down an alley. “It’s just this way.”

People took their time leaving the theater. Everyone was in high spirits after the show, including me. Knowing Donovan still cared about me had relieved some of my stress, yet knowing what he’d signed himself up for added a different dose of fear. I needed to see him.

Moving quickly, I caught up with Astrid when she turned down an open street. “Actually, I’ve got somewhere I need to be.”

She stopped on a dime. We stood underneath a store awning. Bright lights from the interior flashed onto the dark sidewalk. “Oh, come on. It’s my treat.”

My lips twitched. “Thanks, but you’ve already treated me, and I’m not hungry.”

“Fine. So, where are we going?” Cocking her head, she smiled at me.

But her friendly personality didn’t fool me. I knew what she wanted. Freedom. And for some reason I didn’t fully understand, I was her only ticket out.

I was still confused about her position in the library and why my dad had placed her there. I was also uncomfortable having another witch around. Trying to recall the last time I’d hung out with another female witch drew me up to a blank.

Most witches didn’t trust me not to copy their power. Didn’t Astrid know what I was capable of?

“You know, most witches avoid me,” I said, a tactic to intimidate.

“Yeah, well, I’m not most witches.” She shouldered her purse higher. “Look, you bailed on me at the theater to go talk to that sexy vamp, so I figure, you kind of owe me. Again.”

I laughed. “Your math is off.”

She waved me off. “Nah. We were supposed to hang out. So, let’s hang out.”

I blinked. “Do you actually want to hang out with me, or are you trying to avoid the library?”

She blew a breath. “Honestly? Both?” She laughed at my expression. “I mean, I thought we were having fun. You seem okay to me. Funny, actually. Seriously, I don’t know what all the fuss is about concerning you.”

My cheeks burned. “I copy power. And apparently, if the person doesn’t hand it over, my power takes it by force, and it doesn’t feel good.”

“Ohh.” She wiggled her fingers in a spooky way. “I’m so scared.” Grabbing her purse strap again, she said, “Not.”

Okay. This was officially weird. We had shared some laughs, but this girl didn’t know me. No way was she just trying to hang out. “Who put you up to this? Was it my dad? Anthony?”

Her smile was strained. “You’re so suspicious. I didn’t think there was anyone more suspicious than me. I can see we’re going to be great friends.”

Friends? No way. I didn’t have witch girlfriends. Only human. Only Mikayla. Only ever Mikayla. Everyone else was always out for something. Astrid admitted to needing something from me, and I wasn’t in the mood to deal with someone else’s problems. “This isn’t going to work.
